INTRODUCTION

The goals of the Center for Parallel and Distributed Computing that was started in Sep. 1, 1996, are to conduct leading-edge, fundamental science and engineering research that will provide a sound technological basis to the technology of parallel and distributed computing. The specific research areas that are undertaken at the Center include all aspects of parallel and distributed computing, namely, parallel architectures, parallel compilers and software, parallel and distributed algorithms and applications, parallel and distributed database systems, and parallel I/O systems. An overview of the research projects and their interactions is shown in Figure [*].

This report outlines the activities in the center during September 1, 1997 and August 31, 1998.
