General Information

The Symposium on Multimedia over Wireless will be held in conjunction with the World's Premier International Conference on Wireless Networks, Communications, and Mobile Computing (IEEE WirelessCom) 2005 in the Sheraton Maui Resort, Maui, Hawaii. Symposium participants and their guest will enjoy the convenience of staying at the conference venue with truly special WirelessCom rates. All papers presented at the symposium will be published in the same printed abstract volume and CD-ROM proceedings as other symposia and the IEEE WirelessCom 2005 conference.

The symposium will select the best papers and the authors of the papers will be recognized at the conference. Outstanding papers on video communications will be invited to extend to full version for a special issue of the Journal of Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing. The special issue will be published in early 2007.

Scope

The rapid growth in interactive multimedia applications, such as video telephonies, video games and TV broadcasting have resulted in spectacular strides in the progress of wireless communication systems. The current third generation (3G) wireless systems and the next generation (4G) wireless systems in planning support higher bit rates. However, the high error rates and stringent delay constraints in wireless systems are still significant obstacles for these applications and services. On the other hand, the development of more advanced wireless systems provides opportunities for proposing novel wireless multimedia protocols and new applications and services that can take the maximum advantage of the systems.

This symposium will provide an excellent forum for all experts working in these areas to join together and to discuss various important issues on multimedia over wireless. It aims at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this area. The symposium is to be held in the timing that the evolution to 4G. Therefore, it is the time for us to get together to enjoy wonderful atmosphere in Hawaii while having the technical discussions in Wireless Multimedia. The papers submitted to this symposium should focus on the state-of-the-art research in various important areas related to emerging technologies and standards on the coding and transmission of multimedia information over wireless networks.
