Information on courses, teaching, and grade reporting.

My office is Tech room CG51, on the G level near the door leading out to Sargent Hall. My office phone is 847-491-3269 and my e-mail address is butz@ece.northwestern.edu .

Office hours Fall 2008: Wednesday & Friday 1-1:50, or by appointment. Note that when I have more than one student in my office we will often move to the lab room CG50 next to my office. I may also do that if I just prefer to have a board to write on. Therefore if I am not in my office during office hours I will probably be in CG50. Another possibility is that I am in room MG18 in connection with some 202 lab problem.

Information for courses:

202 | B41 | 222 | 328 | C59 | 363 | C65 | 398 | 410 | D11 | 418 | D21

I use an informal grade reporting system that requires that students have an account on the EECS department system of Sun Unix machines. This reporting system is not used for 202. I will on request from a student (except for a 202 student) set up an account on this EECS system for any student in a class of mine who does not already have one. For a student who is not an EECS major the right to use the EECS system will exist only for the duration of the course.

In order to use my grade reporting system be prepared to enter your 7 digit "employee ID" number when prompted. Log on and say from the Unix command line:

~butz/report

This gives not only exam grades but also class averages and high and low grades. To learn exam grades, you can also go to the Blackboard web site:

https://courses.northwestern.edu/

Then log in, go to Courses, then click on the course number in the courses list, go to Tools, then Check Grade.

Final letter grades can be learned around 5 PM, on the Monday following final exam week, using "report" or by going to CAESAR on the University's web sites.

Matlab work can be done on the EECS Unix/Linux systems, on the PCs in our Wilkinson lab and on the IT PCs in room MG45. Some students have Matlab on their personal machines.
