CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN I wish to welcome our students back from Spring break and to the beginning of the Spring quarter. We hope that you all had happy and joyous holidays. The Spring quarter starts on Tuesday, March 29, but with a twist: THE MONDAY CLASS SCHEDULE WILL BE FOLLOWED THIS FIRST TUESDAY. I am pleased to announce that a new center has been established by the Dean on "Ultra Scale Computing and Information Security" with Alok Choudhary as Director. More information and a link to the center web site will be available in a future ECEnews.
This week Dr. Daniel Oblinger from IBM will be visiting ECE and CS on

Thursday, March 31, 2005: Ph.D. Final Examination - 3:00 p.m.
TRAVEL
Alok Choudhary traveled to Davos, Switzerland, March 20-24. He gave
a keynote speech at the SOS conference.
Abe Haddad traveled to New Orleans, March 18-22, and attended the
annual meeting of ECE Department Heads Association.
Jorge Nocedal is traveling to Ithaca, NY, March 28-30, to present a
seminar at Cornell University entitled, "Interior and Penalty
Methods."
Professor Thrasos Pappas traveled to Maui, Hawaii, March 7-9,
to attend the National Consortium for MASINT (Measurement and
Signature Intelligence) Research semi-annual technology review
meeting, and to give a presentation on the project "A Distributed
Cognitive Information Processing System" that is supported by the
Consortium. (Profs. Aggelos Katsaggelos, Ying Wu, and Sam Musa are
co-investigators on the project.)
Frank Splitt, McCormick Faculty Fellow and a member of the ECE
Advisory Board, also attended the annual meeting of the ECE Department
Heads Association in New Orleans, March 18-22, 2005.
Bruce Wessels traveled to Los Angeles, CA, March 20-24, to attend the
American Physical Society meeting. He presented papers entitled:
"Kinetics of polarization switching of epitaxial BaTiO3," "In-plane
uniaxial anisotropy of InMnAs," and "Electronic states in Mn4+ ions in
p-type GaN."
