CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN Our faculty recently received two gifts from industry: Hai Zhou received a gift of $40,000 from Cadence Design Systems, Inc., to support his research on data flow driven floorplanning by ACG (Adjacent Constraint Graph). Robert Dick received a gift of $43,000 from NEC Laboratories America, Inc., for research on content compression mechanisms for mobile devices. Professor Razeghi was granted a patent on Focal Plane Arrays in Type II-Superlattices. This is final exam week at Northwestern with Spring Break next week. Best wishes to our students for success on their exams. There is a McCormick Faculty meeting on Monday, March 14, at 1:30. Please join me in wishing Dean Joe Schofer the best as this is his last faculty meeting as Interim Dean.
-Abe Haddad TRAVEL Jorge Nocedal is traveling to Berkeley, CA, March 11-15, to present a seminar at the Chemistry Department, University of California-Berkeley, entitled: "Optimization Algorithms for Computational Chemistry." Mary Phillips attended the Optical Fiber Communication Conference in Anaheim, California. Her student, Jinye Zhang, presented a post-deadline paper at the conference, "Cancellation of Intensity Noise caused by Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in an Optical Fiber Transmission System" co-authored by Jinye Zhang and M. R. Phillips. Peter Scheuermann traveled to Arlington, VA, to attend a panel meeting of the National Science Foundation on March 7-8.
Bruce Wessels traveled to Arlington, VA, March 7-8, to attend an NSF
workshop on Integrative Systems. He also traveled to Anaheim, CA,
March 8-9, to attend the Optical Fiber Conference.
