CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

Happy Valentine's Day to the ECE family at NU.

This week we have a visit from Motorola on Thursday, February 17, 2005, to review the research at the NU-Motorola Center for Telecommunications Research.

McCormick Faculty Fellow Frank Splitt has accepted an invitation from Syracuse University President Nancy Cantor to participate in an April 21/22 workshop funded by the Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) of the National Science Foundation (NSF). The workshop will address the core question, "What Does It Mean to be Educated in the 21st Century?" and will be chaired by President Cantor. Particular focus will be put on preparation of students for the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) workforce. The NSF intends to use the outcome of this and other workshops to shape future programs they may offer. Dr. Splitt will be joining a small subset of the eminent people who could contribute to conversation on the topic. Dr. Splitt is an alumnus of our department, and is a member of the ECE Advisory Board.

-Abe Haddad
Interim Chairman
