CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN Last week the Office of Industry Relations at the McCormick School announced the recipients of the Ford Undergraduate Research Grants and the GM/EXCEL Alumni Undergraduate Research Grants for 2004-05. The grants are in the amount of $5,000. We are very pleased that three of the recipients are either our own majors or working under the supervision of our faculty. The recipient (one of only two) of the General Motors/EXCEL Grant is John Velez, who is working under the supervision of Prof. Randy Berry, on the project: "A Zero Public Infrastructure Vehicle Based Traffic Information System". The recipients of the Ford Grants are: Kevin Huang, who is working under the supervision of Prof. Allen Taflove (ECE), and Prof. Vadim Backman (BME), on the project: "Maxwell's Equations Modeling of Biological Tissue Optics for Improving Early-Stage Cancer Detection in Epithelial Tissues"; Aaron Beach, who is working under the supervision of Prof. Robert Dick, on the project: "A Self-Organizing Car-to-Car Network for Traffic Routing and Data Exchange." Please join me in congratulating the students and faculty for these important awards. A special note: Prof. Horace Yuen (dancer) graces the Chicago Tribune "Friday Section" on page 18 (November 12).
