CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN As many of you know, ECE received a $500,000 cash grant from Motorola Foundation in 1998 to support various activities in the department for a period of five years ($100,000 per year). Since the grant ended this year, we have been working with Motorola for the past few months on a revised proposal. Last week we submitted a proposal for a cash grant of $750,000 to the Motorola Foundation ($150,000 per year) to support some new initiatives in graduate student fellowship support, minority student recruiting at the graduate and undergraduate level, and to continue our existing initiatives in undergraduate research and Distinguished Lectureships. I wish to thank Kate Igoe and Eric Limbs from Northwestern Corporate Relations for their help in working with the ECE department on the proposal to Motorola. I also wish to thank Prof. Larry Henschen, Associate Dean of the Graduate School, for helping to provide some matching support from the Graduate School for the proposal. Finally, I wish to thank Bob Barnett and Ken Zdunek from Motorola for providing us feedback on earlier drafts of the proposal so that it would be well received at Motorola. We will hear back from Motorola Foundation about the outcome of the proposal in a couple of months.
