ECE Department Weekly Newsletter
February 9-13, 2004

CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

The ECE Department has published its 2002-03 Annual Research Report for the period covering Sep. 1, 2002 to Aug. 31, 2003. The report is available online on the ECE web page at www.ece.northwestern.edu under Research - > Annual Reports. Some of the highlights of the research activities of the faculty and students of ECE for the past year are given below. During 2002-03, the total research funding was $7.5 million, an increase from $6.9 million during 2001-02. During this period, our 29 faculty members published two books, 10 book chapters, 87 journal papers, and 131 conference papers.

In addition, our faculty edited two conference proceedings, were granted 10 patents, and presented 112 invited talks. The report is being sent to various Deans and ECE department chairs of the top engineering schools across the nation, and to various companies next week.

I would like to thank Professor Allen Taflove, Director of Publicity and Alumni and Industry Relations, for producing this report based on input from all the faculty. He has done an outstanding job and deserves to be congratulated.

On another note, the faculty interviewing process in ECE has begun full swing. This week, we are interviewing two candidates: Martin Schulz in the computer engineering area on Feb. 10, and Lin Xiao in the systems area on Feb. 12. Please see seminar announcements below. I urge all faculty and students to attend their seminars and give us feedback on these candidates.
