ECE Department Weekly Newsletter
April 5-9, 2004

CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

The ECE department held a very successful ECE Graduate Student Recruiting Day on Friday, April 2, 2004. This year we have admitted more than 20 new students to the ECE department. Seven students who reside in the US visited us on this day and attended a full day of meetings with the faculty. In the morning, they attended presentations by Prith Banerjee on an overview of the ECE department, by Peter Scheurmann on Graduate Studies in the ECE department and by Larry Henschen, on the Graduate School at Northwestern University. This was followed by five-minute research presentations by three groups of faculty. The Computer Engineering area talks were given by Robert Dick, Yehea Ismail, Gokhan Memik, Seda Memik, and Hai Zhou. The Systems area talks were given by Randy Berry, Randy Freeman, Thrasos Pappas, and Ying Wu. The Solid-state and Photonics area talks were given by Seng Ho, Selim Shahriar, Mary Phillips, Steve Slivken, and Allen Taflove. The morning presentations were followed by one-on-one meetings with various faculty members and the students. In the evening the students went to dinner with current ECE graduate students.

I want to thank the faculty members listed above who made all the exciting presentations and met with the students all day. I also want to recognize Kathie Heidenfelder who coordinated all the student visits. She did an outstanding job.
