CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

The ECE Department will be presenting ECE EXPO DAY on Friday, October 24. The purpose of the EXPO is to make all our faculty and graduate and undergraduate students in the department aware of the various research projects done by our departmental faculty. We are also inviting some of our industrial representatives to attend the event.

Many of the ECE faculty will make five-minute presentations of their research activities that day. In addition, all graduate students and postdocs in the ECE department will present posters highlighting their work.

The following is a preliminary schedule of the event.

PRELIMINARY SCHEDULE -- Friday, Oct. 24

All talks in ECE Conference Room L324, poster sessions outside in 3rd floor L wing

9AM-9:30AM -- Welcome and overview of ECE department -- Prith Banerjee

9:30AM-10:15AM -- Faculty talks in solid state and photonics

10:15AM-12noon -- Poster Session by students in solid state and photonics (with coffee and cookies)

1:45PM-2:15PM -- Intellectual Property Issues for Startup Companies

TRAVEL

Professor Prith Banerjee is traveling to San Jose, CA, October 13-14, to attend meetings at AccelChip and Calypto Design Systems.

Professor Yehea Ismail is traveling to San Diego from Monday, October 13 to Thursday, October 16 to attend and give a presentation in the SRC review meeting.

Professor Jorge Nocedal is traveling to Santa Clara, CA, Oct 9-12, 2003, to visit INTEL and present a seminar entitled, "Advances in the Solution of Very Large Nonlinear Optimization Problems."
