ECE Department Weekly Newsletter
November 3-7, 2003

CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

Each year, the ECE department prepares a RESUME BOOKLET which lists the resumes of our graduating students. We send this booklet to various companies to help our students find jobs after graduation. We also send this booklet to other universities to help our students consider graduate school (M.S. or Ph.D) at those universities.

This year, we will list ONE-page resumes of all our graduating B.S. students in electrical engineering and computer engineering, ONE-page resumes of our graduating M.S. students in electrical and computer engineering and TWO-page resumes of our graduating Ph.D. students. We will list all students who are planning to graduate between Sep. 1, 2003 and Aug. 31, 2004 in this booklet. We will prepare the Resume Booklet in two forms: (1) hardcopy and (2) electronic.

Graduating students are encouraged to email their resumes using WORD or PDF files to Kathie Heidenfelder (kathie@ece.northwestern.edu) by Friday, Nov. 7, 2003. Kathie will collect all the resumes and prepare the booklet by Nov. 17 and mail it to various companies and universities by Nov. 24, 2003. I want to thank Kathie in advance for agreeing to compile this booklet.

I wish the graduating students the best of luck in finding jobs this year.

BEST POSTER AWARDS

I would like to thank all the graduate students who presented posters during the ECE EXPO event on Oct. 24, 2003. We have decided to give out best poster awards to the best posters in each of the sessions. Please note that these decisions are very subjective. The judges had a very difficult time in picking the best posters in each category. Each winning poster will receive a certificate and a $100 check to be shared among multiple people on a team. The winners are....

SOLID STATE AND PHOTONICS category
Judges: Allen Taflove and Mary Phillips
Poster A-14 , Eric Corndorf, Chuang Liang, Greg Kanter, and Vladimir Grigoryan
"High-speed quantum data encryption through fiber-optic networks using coherent states" (advisor: Prem Kumar)

SYSTEMS category
Judges: Randy Berry and Thrasos Pappas
Poster B-9, P. Pahalawatta and D. Depalov, "Intelligent Video Processing" (advisors: Aggelos Katsaggelos and Thrasos Pappas)

COMPUTER ENGINEERING category
Judges: Seda Memik and Robert Dick
Poster C-8, Masud Chowdhury, "Current Trends and Noise Analysis in Deep
Sub-Micron VLSI Circuits," (advisor: Yehea Ismail)
