CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

Each year the ECE department gives out awards to the best undergraduates, best TAs, and best faculty, and for the best Ph.D. theses. The ECE Teaching and Award Committee (Freeman, Lin, Plonus, Zhou) chaired by Prof. Martin Plonus recommended the following awards for our students and faculty. The awards were presented on Friday, May 30, in the ECE Conference Room.

1) The Best EE Senior Undergraduate Award based on highest cumulative GPA was given to INDRANIL SEN-GUPTA.

2) The Best Comp. Eng Senior Undergraduate Awards based on highest cumulative GPA were given jointly to DANIEL HODGES and MARK DREDZE.

3) The Best Teaching Assistant Award was given to ORAL EMIN. This award is given based on nominations by students.

4) The Best Teacher Award was given to YEHEA ISMAIL. This award is given based on nominations by students.

5) The Best Phd Thesis award goes to two recipients: JAY E. SHARPING, for his thesis on "Fiber-Based Entangled Photon-pair Generation", (advisor, Prem Kumar) and to CARLOS E. LUNA, for his thesis on "Video Quality and Network Efficiency Trade-Offs in Video Streaming Applications", (advisor, Aggelos Katsaggelos).

Please join me in congratulating the students and faculty for winning these awards this year. We are very proud of their achievements.

TRAVEL

Professor Robert Dick will be in Princeton, New Jersey, June 2-3 to attend his graduation ceremony.

Professor Yehea Ismail is traveling to Anaheim, CA, May 30-June 7, to attend the Design Automation Conference where his students will present three papers.

Professor Hai Zhou will travel to Anaheim, CA for the ICCAD (IEEE International Conference on Computer Aided Design) technical program committee meeting and attend the Design Automation Conference 5/30-6/2.
