ECE Department Weekly Newsletter
January 20-24, 2003

CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

In this newsletter I would like to inform everyone about our status on hiring new faculty members in the ECE department. Our department is looking for four new faculty members in the following areas:

  • Solid-state and photonics with an emphasis on nano-technology (one position)
  • Systems with an emphasis on networking and communication (one position)
  • Computer engineering with an emphasis on computer architecture and VLSI CAD (two positions)
We have received more than 200 applications for these positions thus far, and continue to get about a dozen applications every day. The three search committees have started the difficult task of sorting through the resumes and deciding which applicants to invite for interviews. We plan to interview about 12 faculty candidates over the next two months. The Winter quarter will be very busy with these interviews.

I would like to thank Nancy Singer for processing all these applications, requesting letters of reference, and arranging the interviews.

Please watch for announcements about seminars given by these faculty candidates. I invite all faculty and students to attend as many of these seminars as possible, and to give us feedback on which candidates would be appropriate for our department. Some of them will be our colleagues and our teachers!

-Prith Banerjee
Chairman
