Jean-Piere Leburton from the University of Illinois will give a seminar on Monday, and Elif Uysal-Biyikoglu from Stanford will give a seminar on Tuesday. See details in the seminar announcements below. I invite all faculty and graduate students to attend both seminars. Your feedback on the faculty candidates is crucial. -Prith Banerjee FACULTY CANDIDATE SEMINARS DATE: Monday, February 3, 2003 DATE: Tuesday, February 4, 2003 TRAVEL Professor Thrasos Pappas traveled to Santa Clara, CA, January 20-24, where he co-chaired (with Bernice Rogowitz) the conference on Human Vision and Electronic Imaging, under the aegis of the IS&T/SPIE Annual Symposium on Electronic Imaging. He was accompanied by Junqing Chen and Passant Karunaratne who presented papers at the conference. On January 22, Prof. Pappas visited the University of California at Berkeley, where he gave a presentation on "Efficient Video Communication over Lossy Channels: Dynamic Source/Channel Adaptation and Distortion Evaluation." Everyone is invited, and your families are welcome, too. You are encouraged to prepare and bring a dish from your country, either a main course, dessert, or beverage, to share with our ECE community. We are preparing tiny pennant flags with your names on them, and you will be able to pin your flag on your home town on the world map. See you a week from Wednesday! -Jill Wright
