CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN The ECE department has been conducting searches for four new faculty members this year: two in computer engineering, one in systems, and one in solid-state engineering. We have had a very busy interviewing season during the months of February and March. I am delighted to inform everyone that we have been successful in hiring two new computer engineering faculty who will join the department in September 2003. They are Gokhan Memik and Seda Ogrenci Memik. Gokhan Memik received his B.S. degree in Computer Engineering in 1998 from Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey, his M.S. degree in Computer Engineering in 2000 from Northwestern University, and is expected to receive his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from UCLA in August 2003 under the supervision of Prof. Bill Mangione-Smith. His research interests are in computer architecture, embedded systems, compilers, and design automation. He is the author of about 20 papers in these areas. His seminar on March 12 was entitled, "Just Say No: Benefits of Early Cache Miss Determination." Seda Ogrenci Memik received her B.S. degree in Computer Engineering in 1998 from Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey, her M.S. degree in Computer Engineering in 2000 from Northwestern University; and is expected to receive her Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from UCLA in August 2003 under the supervision of Prof. Majid Sarrafzadeh. Her research interests are in design automation for embedded systems; she is the author of more than 25 papers in this area. Her seminar on March 13 was on "Design Planning for Synthesis." We are delighted to welcome these new faculty members to our department and look forward to collaborating with them in research and teaching.
