CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

I wish to welcome all students, faculty, and staff to the new academic year 2002-03. As you know, I have been on leave this past year involved in a startup company called AccelChip. I returned to the ECE department as Chairman on September 1, 2002. I wish to thank Abe Haddad for serving the department as Interim Chairman during this past year.

As all of you know, Fall Quarter classes start on Wednesday, September 25. Hence we are starting the weekly departmental newsletter for the 2003-03 academic year from this week.

During 2002-03, I will be working with the following administrative structure:

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES/AWARDS/HONORS

At the IFAC meetings in Barcelona in July, Abe Haddad was appointed to a three-year term as chairman of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) Awards Committee and member of the IFAC Executive Board (dates:July 2002 to July 2005).

Aggelos Katsaggelos became a member of the 2002 Motorola Research Visionary Board.

TRAVEL (July-August 2002)

Professor Prith Banerjee traveled to Snowbird, UT, July 12-14, to attend an NSF CISE Infrastructure Meeting.

Professor Yehea Ismail traveled to Calgary, Canada, to attend, present a paper, and chair a session in the IEEE Conference on System on a Chip (SoC) from July 5-8.

Professor Aggelos Katsaggelos traveled to Granada Spain, June 11-14, where he gave a talk on "Recent Advances in Multimedia Signal Processing," and also attended the defense of a PhD student he co-supervised. He then traveled to Zadar, Croatia, where he was the keynote speaker at the EURASIP-IEEE International Symposium on Video/Image Processing and Multimedia Communications, June 16-19, 2002.

Professor Chung-Chieh Lee traveled to NSF in Washington, D.C., August 30, as a panelist to review SBIR proposals in wireless communication.

Professor Jorge Nocedal traveled to Namur, Paris, August 17-23, to visit the University of Namur and the Ecole Normal Superieure for continued research collaboration.

OTHER NEWS

Please join me in welcoming Lana Kiperman to the department. Lana is the new secretary working with the Center for Photonic Communication and Computing, (CPCC), with Profs. Prem Kumar, Mary Phillips, Selim Shahriar, Alan Sahakian, Seng-Tiong Ho, Bruce Wessels, and Horace Yuen.

Lana previously worked in the Materials World Modules Program with Professor Bob Chang.

We wish her much success in her new role in ECE and CPCC.
