CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

I am delighted to inform everyone that two of our Assistant Professors, Yehea Ismail and Hai Zhou, have received the National Science Foundation CAREER award this week. The NSF CAREER Award is one of the most prestigious awards for junior faculty in this country. As part of the award, each faculty member will receive funding of $400,000 over five years which can be used to support graduate students and other research expenses. Many of our department faculty have received this award in the past, but we have never received TWO awards in the same year; and the fact that both are in the same area of VLSI computer aided design in computer engineering is even more remarkable! Our department is proud to have two young faculty stars in VLSI.

We were also informed this week that Professor Valerie Taylor has decided to join Texas A&M University as Department Chair of Computer Science effective January 1, 2003. We will miss her in the department, but wish her success in her new position.

Chairman
