It is with pleasure that I welcome our faculty, staff, and students to the beginning of Winter Quarter 2002. Happy New Year to all. We hope you enjoyed the break and the holidays, and that you are coming back refreshed to start working five days a week again.

Professor Chi-haur Wu has been informed that he has received another patent issued by the US Patent Office for work he did with D.T. Lee at Academia Sinica, Taiwan. US Patent No. 6,324,464 B1: "An Intelligent System for Regulating the Speed of an Electric Motorcycle," issued on November 27, 2001.
Professor Prem Kumar traveled to Dallas, TX, November 26-29, 2001, and attended DARPA's QuIST Program Kickoff Meeting and the ARO MURI Annual Review.
Professor Kumar is traveling to Salt Lake City, Utah, January 5-7, to present an invited paper entitled, "Fiber-Optic Quantum Communications," at the 32nd Winter Colloquium on The Physics of Quantum Electronics (PQE).
Professor Jorge Nocedal is traveling to Boulder Colorado, January 3-6, to visit the Computer Science Dept. at the University of Colorado, for continued research collaboration.
