CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

Our faculty recruiting program continues this week with visits by three candidates: Wei Yu. from Stanford University in the Networks area is visiting us on Monday, April 8; The other two visitors are in the solid-state area and both are from the US Air Force: Gail Brown is visiting us on Tuesday, April 9 and James Lott is visiting us on Thursday, April 11. Please make every attempt to attend the seminars. Faculty are urged to get their students to attend as well.

Congratulations are in order to the following:

Prof. Valerie Taylor is the 2002 winner of the Computing Research Association A. Nico Habermann Award which she will receive in Snowbird in July 2002.

Prof. Prith Banerjee has a nice write-up in the EE Times about his successful company, AccelChip. A summary is given below.

Our graduate student, Joseph A. Zambreno, has been awarded an NSF Fellowship.

TRAVEL

Professor Renato Figueiredo is traveling to West Lafayette, IN, April 10-11, to attend a Mini-workshop: Network for Computational Nanotechnology, at Purdue University.

Professor Hai Zhou will travel to San Diego from April 6-10 for the International Symposium on Physical Design (ISPD) '02. He is a TPC member of the conference and will chair a session on "Floorplanning and post-layout optimization."

ACCELCHIP TOOL SYNTHESIZES MATLAB DESIGNS

SAN FRANCISCO: AccelChip Inc., a startup, believes it has cracked a longstanding design problem with a new tool that creates synthesizable Verilog and VHDL code from Matlab and Simulink designs for use in Xilinx or Altera field-programmable gate arrays. While Matlab and Simulink are popular simulators, there has heretofore been no easy path between them and customizable silicon, the company said.

AccelChip (Schaumburg, Ill.) is a spin-off of Northwestern University, where the technology for the company's AccelFPGA synthesis tool was developed under a grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa)....
