CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

First, I wish to extend my sympathy to anyone in the Northwestern family who suffered due to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. I do realize the upheavals in the plans of many of our new and returning students. We hope that we can start the academic year in as normal a fashion as possible and will attempt to solve any problems resulting from the events of last week. As you may know, the event caused us to postpone the meeting of the ECE Advisory Board which was scheduled for September 13, 2001.

I want to welcome all our new and returning undergraduate and graduate students. I assume that the faculty have had a restful but very productive summer, and are ready to resume their academic year duties with enthusiasm. Special welcome is extended to our new faculty who joined us on September 1, 2001 (exact arrival date was of course strongly influenced by the events of last week):

Renato Figueiredo, Ph.D. from Purdue University, as an Assistant Professor in the computer architecture area;

Selim Shahriar, Ph.D. from MIT, as Associate Professor in the photonics area;

Ying Wu, Ph.D. from UIUC, as Assistant Professor in the image and signal processing area;

Hai Zhou, Ph.D. from University of Texas at Austin, in the VLSI/CAD area.

Please join me in welcoming them and making their experience at NU very pleasant.

One faculty member, Chris Jelen, resigned to join Northrup-Grumman. He shall be missed by all. Also, Carl Kannewurf retired after a very productive career in our department, but will continue to be around as an Emeritus Professor.

We extend our congratulations to Randy Freeman who was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure; he is also taking over the Directorship of the Dynamics Systems & Controls Council. Special congratulations to Professor Valerie Taylor for her selection to receive the Harriet B. Rigas Award of the IEEE Education Society.

I look forward to working with you during the 2001-02 academic year, which I hope to be productive and exciting, but peaceful.

-Abe Haddad
Interim Chairman
