After three years as Chairman of the ECE department, I have decided to step down temporarily from the Chairmanship for one year starting Sept. 1, 2001 to Aug. 31, 2002 and take a part-time leave.
The reason for this leave is that I have decided to get more involved in a startup company called MACH DESIGN SYSTEMS located in Schaumburg, IL. This company is based on the MATCH compiler technology that some colleagues and I have developed at Northwestern with support from DARPA over the past three years. Next year I will continue to be a part-time faculty member at NWU and teach two courses (ECE 358 in Fall and ECE 458 in Spring) and continue to do research and supervise students. I will just not be the Chairman because this is very time consuming work.
On March 28, Dean John Birge and Provost Larry Dumas appointed Prof. Abraham Haddad as the Interim Chairman for the period Sept. 1, 2001 to Aug. 31, 2002. As most of you know, Prof. Haddad was the Chairman of the department for more than ten years before I became the Chairman, so the transition should be very smooth. I wish to thank Prof. Haddad for agreeing to take on the leadership of the department during my absence.
I also wish to thank all the faculty, staff, and students for their support over the past three years. It has been great working with all of you.
