CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

It is a pleasure to inform everyone that we have received some large software donations from two major CAD companies, Synopsys and Cadence, in the past few weeks.

We have received 20 copies of all the Synopsys tools including Behavioral Compiler, Design Compiler, COSSAP, EPIC power modeling, FPGA Express, etc. These have been installed on all the SUN workstations in the ECE Wilkinson lab and on various research machines. The total market value of the software donation is more than $4 million but we received it through their University Program. I wish to thank Synopsys Corporation for making this software donation to our department.

We have also received 20 copies of all the Cadence tools including SPW, Buildgates, Silicon Ensemble, PKS, and a whole host of other tools. These have also been installed on all the SUN workstations in the ECE Wilkinson lab and on various research machines. The total market value of the software donation is at least $6 million but we have received them through their University Program. I wish to thank Cadence Design Systems for making this software donation to our department.

These CAD tools complement the Mentor Graphics set of EDA tools that we already have in our department, which are being used in various courses. Now all ECE undergrad and graduate students will be able to use these latest state-of-the-art software tools from all three major CAD vendors in the world in their education and research.

I wish to thank Pred Bundalo and Chris Bachmann for installing the software so quickly on all these machines. For more information, please contact <root@ece.northwestern.edu>.
