Every year the ECE department gives out awards for the best Ph.D. thesis, the best electrical engineering and computer engineering undergrads, the best teacher and best teaching assistant, and other awards.
I would like to thank the ECE Teaching and Awards Committee consisting of Prof. Martin Plonus (Chairman), Prof. Abe Haddad, Prof. Randy Freeman, and Prof. Wei-Chung Lin for selecting this year's award winners. We had solicited nominations from the faculty and students for these awards.
I am pleased to announce this year's award winners:
The Best Ph.D. thesis award for a thesis published in the ECE department during the 1999-2000 year goes to PATRICK KUNG, a student of Prof. Manijeh Razeghi.
An Honorable Mention for the Best Ph.D. thesis goes to JAY WILLIAMS a student of Prof. Aggelos Katsaggelos.
The Best Undergraduate student based on GPA in electrical engineering goes to WIROONSAK SANTIPACH.
The Best Undergraduate student based on GPA in computer engineering goes to KENNETH EGURO.
The Best Teacher in the ECE department during 1999-2000 goes to Prof. CHI-HAUR WU based on the number and strength of student letters.
The Best Teaching Assistant award goes to FEI YEH based on student letters.
An Honorable Mention for the Best TA category goes to CHRIS SWIDER.
The Best Posters presented during the ECE Open House on May 19 go to three groups of students:
YIKAI SU and ANJALI AGARWAL, "Technology for Ultra-High Speed All-Optical Networks" (Advisor: Prem Kumar).
ANDREW SEGALL and PASSANT KARUNARATNE, "Pre and Post-Processing Techniques for Compressed Video" (Advisor: Aggelos Katsaggelos).
KIA BAZARGAN and SEDA OGRENCI, "Reconfigurable Computing" (Advisor: Majid Sarrafzadeh).
The awards will be presented in a ceremony on Thursday, June 1, 2000 at 4-5pm in the ECE Conference Room (L324).

Prem Kumar traveled to Menlo Park, CA, May 24-27, presented a paper at a conference and attended the annual MURI Program Review, Air Force Office of Scientific Research.
I had nominated my student, Jay Sharping, for a MURI
Fellowship, which are special graduate fellowships reserved by the DoD
for US nationals to go with the MURI awards. I am pleased to announce
that Jay was announced a winner. It will support him (full stipend and
GRATS) for a 3-year period.
