CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

In this newsletter I wish to update everyone on the search process for faculty positions in the ECE department for Fall 2000. We were looking for three candidates in the areas of:

  1. Photonics;
  2. Networks and Communication; and
  3. VLSI Design and CAD.
We received more than 200 applications for the three positions and invited 12 applicants for interviews. During the months of January and February, we interviewed 11 candidates. We have one more who will visit us on March 20. The status of this candidate will be decided after that date.

Last week we received detailed feedback from all faculty and students who met with the candidates or attended their seminars. We had asked everyone to describe the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate and also to provide a ranking of the candidates in each of the three fields. I was extremely pleased to receive so much detailed feedback.

On March 1, the Recruiting Committee met and discussed all the candidates and the detailed feedback received, and recommended six potential candidates (two in each area) for possible offers.

We have a full ECE faculty meeting scheduled for Monday, March 6, at which we will make a final decision on offers to the candidates. We will recommend three first choices followed by three second choices for the three areas. This list will be forwarded to the Dean of the McCormick School and the Provost for their final approval. Three offers are expected to be generated around the middle of March. If some of the candidates on the first list turn us down, we may make alternate offers to some of the others on the list.

Unfortunately, at this point we cannot make the names public. We will inform everyone of the outcomes as soon as the candidates have accepted our offers.

I wish to thank all the faculty and the students for taking time off their busy schedules to meet with each candidate. I also want to acknowledge the tremendous work done by my assistant Nancy Singer in arranging the schedules, travel arrangements, and hotel arrangements of these dozen faculty candidates, and arranging the coffee and snacks every day for each seminar.

Happy Recruiting.

Chairman

CSRL NEWS

DOMAIN CHANGE

As of March 1st, the ECE department supports the use of the University-mandated new domain name, northwestern.edu. So for the next four years, e.g., delta will be known both as delta.ece.nwu.edu and as delta.ece.northwestern.edu. For the time being, reverse lookups will continue to return the nwu.edu version.

ACROREAD TO BE UPGRADED

By popular demand, the Adobe Acrobat reader, acroread, will be upgraded from version 3.x to version 4.05 on Monday. This new version exists for HP-UX, Solaris SPARC, and Solaris Intel. It is not available for SunOS, so that version will remain at 3.x.
