CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

In this week's newsletter I wish to update everyone about our department's initiatives with regard to graduate student recruiting. First of all, we have requested names and addresses of undergraduate seniors from other universities who have expressed interest in graduate studies. In return, we have also sent our colleagues at those schools copies of our ECE Resume Booklet so that they can identify prospective graduate students from our undergraduate student body.

A second initiative that we have undertaken this week is to use the services of the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations), which administers the standardized tests that universities use to select graduate students. Using their online database search engine, it is possible to narrow our search to students from various geographical regions (e.g., the midwest), students with certain GPA ranges, and students with preferences for going to graduate schools in certain areas, etc. We have obtained such a list of graduate students in the U.S. We are in the process of sending those prospective students information about our department, our graduate study brochure, and a graduate application form. We are using the same technology that telemarketers use to sell products to us at home! We hope to increase the visibility of our graduate program among prospective graduate students in the country. We will report results of this effort at the end of the year.

Chairman
