This page contains news related to the ECE department of the current week. Specifically it includes current information about seminars, exams, travel, research grants, professional news, personal news scheduled for this week.
This newsletter is also emailed by Friday afternoon of previous week to: {faculty,staff,gradstudents,ee-undergrads,co-undergrads}@ece.nwu.edu.
If you are not receiving this email, please contact root@ece.nwu.edu and we will get you on that email list, mention which category you belong to.
Our ECE department has always had a photo gallery of all the faculty and staff in the department. We never had photos of graduate students who are an integral part of our department's teaching and research activities. This year, for the first time, we have decided to display photos of all current, active graduate students in the department.
I am delighted to let you know that effective this week, photos of all graduate students in our department are posted on a bulletin board on the wall next to the Chairman's office (L352). Please take some time to view the pictures and acquaint yourselves with the faces and names. On many occasions we have all exchanged emails with graduate students without quite knowing who these students are. This will help us all get to know each other a lot better.
I would like to thank Jill Lavelle for taking so much time out of her busy schedule to act as our official department photographer, making all the labels, and painfully sticking all the photographs and name labels on the bulletin board. When this issue was mentioned in one of our staff meetings last month, Jill graciously volunteered to do this job on her own without costing the department a fortune with professional photographers. As you can see from the display, she did an outstanding job.
Getting an accurate list of graduate students was itself a hard task. I would like to thank Judy Stein and Romina Jimenez-Noeckel for assisting Jill in this project. I believe we now have an accurate list and count of our graduate students.
As you can see, there are some names with no photos next to them. This was done intentionally so that at least we have an accurate list of graduate students. Graduate students whose pictures are not on the board are advised to set up an appointment with Jill jlavelle@ece.nwu.edu to take the pictures in the next few weeks so that the photo gallery will be complete. We will try to keep this bulletin board accurate with regard to the Fall quarter registration of each year. Keeping it accurate each month or quarter would be a lot of work. If you find a mistake in the name with a picture, please let Jill know. She will correct any mistakes.
Enjoy the opportunity to get to know our graduate students better.
I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Parallel & Distributed Computing Seminar
DATE: Monday, November 22
TIME: 4:00-5:00 p.m.
PLACE: L324
SPEAKER: Dr. Miron Livny, Computer Science Dept., UW-Madison
SUBJECT: "Commodity Computing"
This talk is of interest to anyone in the department with computing needs. Dr. Livny will also be talking about CONDOR, a system that allows automatic migration of processing jobs to otherwise idle workstations. It also allows the use of multiple, scattered workstations (e.g., those in public computing labs) to be used as a large distributed machine.
There is ongoing discussion on whether we should install this system in our Department. This talk may help in clarifying what this system can do and what the potential benefits are.
