CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

During 1998-99, our department had a Teaching Improvement and Awards Committee consisting of Prof. Randy Freeman, Prof. Wei-Chung Lin, Prof. Peter Scheuermann, and Prof. Martin Plonus (chairman of the committee).

The committee suggested various things over the year to improve the quality of teaching in our department. Last week the committee met and recommended the following awards to our students and faculty.

It is my pleasure to announce these awards in this newsletter. We will present the awards to the recipients at our ECE faculty meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 25, at 11:00 in room L324.

  1. Shehzad Amin as the outstanding electrical engineering undergraduate, based on the cumulative GPA which included the '99 winter quarter grades.

  2. Benjamin McLean as the outstanding computer engineering undergraduate, based on the cumulative GPA which included the '99 winter quarter grades.

  3. Jay Sharping was nominated by the undergraduate and graduate student body as the Best Teaching Assistant of the 98/99 academic year.

  4. The Honorable Mentions in the Best TA category were: Mark Chang, Kiarash Bazargan, Jeffrey Browning, Wayne George Phoel, Paul Voss, Gowri Rajappan, and Amy Csizmar Dalal.

  5. The majority of votes for the Best Teacher of 1998/99 went to Prof. Scott Hauck.

  6. The Honorable Mentions for the Best Teacher for 1998/99 went to: Prof. C.C. Lee, Prof. Nate Newman, Prof. Martin Plonus, Prof. Alan Sahakian, and Prof. Allen Taflove.

  7. Dmitry Levandovsky was chosen as the recipient of the Best Ph.D. thesis of the 1998-99 year.

  8. The Honorable Mentions for the best Ph.D. thesis for 1998-99 went to Sanjay Goil and Jian Chen.
I wish to congratulate each and every one of the above students and faculty members for being selected for these awards.

I also wish to thank the Teaching Improvement and Awards Committee and the undergraduate and graduate student body who made the nominations for doing an excellent job in selecting our best students and faculty.

Prof. Jorge Nocedal is traveling to Atlanta, GA, May 8-12 to attend the SIAM Conference on Optimization and present a paper entitled, "An assessment of nonlinear optimization software."

Prof. Prem Kumar is traveling to Washington, DC, May 12-14, to serve on a panel review in the ECS division of NSF.
