CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

The month of March has been very busy for us while interviewing prospective faculty candidates. We are looking for two new faculty members to join our department starting Fall 1999 in the areas of signal and image processing, optics, and networks. We received more than 200 applications for these positions and have invited nine candidates for interviews.

All students and faculty are encouraged to attend the faculty candidate seminars on the days of their visits. See the seminar announcements below for the exact times and places of the seminars. The candidates that are visiting, and their general area of expertise are given below. Three of the candidates will be visiting us this week.

TRAVEL

Professors Prith Banerjee, Alok Choudhary, Scott Hauck, Majid Sarrafzadeh, and Nagaraj Shenoy traveled to Washington, DC, March 4-5, to attend two DARPA Reviews on the MATCH Project and the CHIMAERA Project.

Prof. Valerie Taylor is traveling to Albuquerque, NM, March 8-11, to serve on the X Division Review Committee for LANL.

Prof. Jorge Nocedal is traveling to Paris, Toulouse, France, March 13-21, to initiate new research collaboration with J.C. Gilbert of INRIA, Paris, and continue research collaboration with Meteo France and Dr. Sartenear, Toulouse.
