CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN

I wish to welcome everyone back to school after the Spring Break. We hope that the Spring quarter will be as busy and wonderful for all of us as the Fall and Winter quarters.

The Spring quarter has started off with some excellent news for our ECE department. We just received word that our proposal to Hewlett-Packard Corporation for eight core lab equipment setups for the EE labs has been funded. The equipment is worth about $100,000. Prof. Alan Sahakian, Director of Instructional Labs, along with members of the lab committee had put together a proposal to Hewlett-Packard along with Dr. Mort Rahimi and Gary Greenburg from Academic Technologies to acquire 8 sets of HP VEE based lab equipment consisting of digital oscilloscopes, waveform generators, power supplies, etc. for the undergraduate circuits labs in the renovated ECE labs. We are in the process of ordering seven more setups as a matching purchase to bring the total to 16 (including the development setup which we already have). This should take care of the B02, B41, B42, C06 and C53 labs. During the Winter quarter, several of our own undergraduates participated in the development of some new lab projects for these courses using the new equipment as part of their C99 design projects.

We will now turn our attention to other lab equipment needs for other courses in the ECE department.

I would like to thank Professor Alan Sahakian, members of the lab committee, Tom Anderson (the member of the ECE Advisory Board from HP), and Hewlett-Packard Corporation for making this happen.

We plan to showcase the new lab equipment during our ECE Open House scheduled for Friday May 21.
