In this newsletter, I would like to mention two items. First, I would like everyone to know that one of our department alums, David Carney, received the Northwestern University Alumni Service Award on Saturday, April 10, at a dinner organized by the Northwestern University Alumni Association at the Sheraton Hotel in Chicago. David Carney received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the EECS department several years ago. He had an illustrious career at AT&T and retired as Vice President of Consumer Services in 1998. David Carney is currently a member of our ECE Advisory Board and the McCormick School Advisory Board, and was responsible for providing about $500,000 in funds from AT&T to the ECE department over several years. It was wonderful for the ECE department to have a famous alum recognized at this impressive occasion which honored 20 other Northwestern Alums from various schools. I offer my sincere congratulations to David Carney.
On a different note, I would like to recognize our newsletter editor Carol Surma for doing a tireless job in compiling this weekly electronic newsletter that goes out to all faculty, staff, undergraduate, and graduate students and some members of our Advisory Board. I have heard a lot of praises from various persons (students, faculty, staff and board members) over the past year about the impact this weekly newsletter is having by informing everyone about what is going on in the department. The last person to mention this was David Carney described above who mentioned this during the Alumni Award ceremony on April 10. I thought this would be an appropriate time to recognize Carol Surma for doing an outstanding job with the newsletter. Thank you, Carol.
