I welcome all the students this week to the new academic year. This week is New Student Week at Northwestern, and we have a lot of activities planned for the freshmen engineering students including students in electrical and computer engineering, and new graduate students. Please join me in welcoming all these new students to this campus.
I would like to give you an update of some feedback we received from our first ECE Advisory Board Meeting that took place Thursday, Sept. 10. The meeting was attended by 8 members of the board representing various companies. The board was presented with the vision plan for the department and the various activities that are taking place. The feedback that they provided was excellent and will help to move the department forward.
I thank the following students who have volunteered and have been appointed
to various committees in the department:
1) Michael V. Vasilyev, Amy Csizmar, and Jonathan Geisler as
representatives of the Graduate Committee.
2) Andrew Dukatz on the undergraduate electrical engineering curriculum
committee.
3) James Cooley on the undergraduate computer engineering curriculum
committee.
4) Jason Perlewitz on the undergraduate instructional labs committee.
I would like to ask all the students to get in touch with the student representatives in these committees to find out details about what is being discussed in these committees. We want to make the students a part of our curriculum and lab revision processes.

Professor Plonus and his crew of three placed second in the 1998 Shields National Championship Sailing Regatta . This event (August 26-30, 98) which is usually held on the East Coast, California or Texas was sponsored this year by the Chicago Yacht Club and was raced on Lake Michigan about six miles off Belmont Harbor. Shields 130, a green-hulled, 30 ft. sailing sloop, skippered by Plonus led the series until the last day when fluky winds allowed a skipper from Larchmont, NY to win the series with Shields 239 from Marion, Mass. third, Shields 201 from Newport, RI fourth and Shields 152 from Dallas, Texas fifth. Sixteen boats participated.
