CFS Equipment

Equipment Overview

The department has large number of interconnected UNIX machines, including several NFS file servers, and an instructional computing lab (the Wilkinson Cluster) containing several UNIX workstations and a number of Windows PCs. The departmental ethernet LANs (known as ECEnet) interconnect all faculty and graduate student offices and lab spaces. Dispersed throughout the department are approximately 150 centrally-supported UNIX & Linux machines and about 80 supported Windows PCs.

Equipment Details

ECEnet currently contains about 150 UNIX and Linux workstatations and servers. Of these, 100+ are Suns running the Solaris Operating Environment, and 40+ are RedHat Linux PCs. Wilkinson Cluster lab details are maintained separately.

In order to provide users with a consistent work environment regardless of which supported UNIX/Linux machine they are using, the CFS runs four critical pieces of software. The packages are:

Users of such machines have the same home directory on all machines, use the same pathnames to access system-dependent files such as binaries and man pages, always have access to their electronic mail, and so forth.
