PC Software

SSH

SSH is a secure replacement for telnet/rlogin/rsh/rlogin. It encrypts the entire session, frustrates man-in-the-middle attacks, and prevents spoofing. This software must be used when remotely connecting to department UNIX hosts from off of ECEnet, including from all other Northwestern subnets.

NUIT has obtained a site license for the software. SSH may be downloaded from their site and is available for both Windows and Macintosh operating systems. SSH client and server software is already installed on all supported ECEnet UNIX/Linux hosts. If you want an SSH client for your home UNIX/Linux machines, check with your vendor or download OpenSSH free of charge. This is what most UNIX/Linux admins use.

PC X-Windows Server

Not listed on the sites above, a PC X-Windows server is licensed by NUIT and is available to all university students, staff, and faculty. An X server allows UNIX GUI applications (gv, xterm, netscape, etc) to display on Windows PCs.

Find X-Win32 and its documentation available at NUIT's X-Win32 download site.

Anti-Virus Software

Nowadays, it is of critical importance that Windows users have virus protection software installed and up-to-date. The university has a site license for such software. It may be downloaded from NUIT's web site for both Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
