Performing Windows Update on Windows XP & 2000
To keep your Windows computer security up to date you need to run Microsoft Windows Update
(http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp) to download
the latest Microsoft Windows critical patches and hotfixes.
Manual Windows Update
- Click on Start Button and select Windows Updates
- This opens Microsoft Windows Update page in Internet Explorer
- Click on Scan for Updates
- This will initiate a scan on your computer to check for installed Windows Updates
- After the scan completes, click on Pick Updates. This will list
Windows Updates not yet installed on your computer
- Click on Install
Note: Updates that have an asterix (*) will have to be installed
individually
Automatic Windows Update (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
Windows 2000
- Click on Start - Settings - Control Panel
- Double click on Automatic Updates
- Select third Option "Automatically Download the Updates and Install them on
the Schedule that I Specify"
- Select Everyday at: (Pick the time you want updates to be downloaded
and installed on your Computer). For laptops pick a time when the laptop will be
plugged into a network
Windows XP
- Click on Start - Settings - Control Panel
- Click on Switch to Classic View
- Double click on the System icon
- Click on the Windows Updates tab
- Select third Option "Automatically Download the Updates and Install them on
the Schedule that I Specify"
- Select Everyday at: (Pick the time you want updates to be downloaded
and installed on your Computer). For laptops pick a time that the laptop will be
plugged into a network
