Performing Windows Update on Windows XP & 2000

To keep your Windows computer security up to date you need to run Microsoft Windows Update (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp) to download the latest Microsoft Windows critical patches and hotfixes.

Manual Windows Update

  1. Click on Start Button and select Windows Updates
  2. This opens Microsoft Windows Update page in Internet Explorer
  3. Click on Scan for Updates
  4. This will initiate a scan on your computer to check for installed Windows Updates
  5. After the scan completes, click on Pick Updates. This will list Windows Updates not yet installed on your computer
  6. Click on Install
  7. Note: Updates that have an asterix (*) will have to be installed individually

Automatic Windows Update (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)

Windows 2000

  1. Click on Start - Settings - Control Panel
  2. Double click on Automatic Updates
  3. Select third Option "Automatically Download the Updates and Install them on the Schedule that I Specify"
  4. Select Everyday at: (Pick the time you want updates to be downloaded and installed on your Computer). For laptops pick a time when the laptop will be plugged into a network

Windows XP

  1. Click on Start - Settings - Control Panel
  2. Click on Switch to Classic View
  3. Double click on the System icon
  4. Click on the Windows Updates tab
  5. Select third Option "Automatically Download the Updates and Install them on the Schedule that I Specify"
  6. Select Everyday at: (Pick the time you want updates to be downloaded and installed on your Computer). For laptops pick a time that the laptop will be plugged into a network
