Adding a UNIX Printer Queue

The following step-by-step instructions show how to add a UNIX printer queue to a PC running Windows 2000 or XP.

Part A

  1. Click Start->Settings->Printers
  2. Double-click on the Add Printer icon
  3. From the Add Printer Wizard, click Next>
  4. Select the radio button Local Printer
  5. Uncheck the selection: Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play Printer, then click Next>

  6. Select the radio button Create a New Port
  7. Under Type, select Standard TCP/IP Port then click Next>

  8. From the Add TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard click Next>
  9. Enter printer name or IP address. (Port name will be filled-in automatically.)
  10. Click Next> to continue

  11. For Device Type, select Standard
  12. Leave the Generic Network Card as the default

    Click Next>

  13. Search for the appropriate arinter arivers based on the printer manufacturer (e.g., HP LaserJet 4000 Series PCL)
  14. Name the printer or leave the default name
  15. Select Do not share Printer option and click Next>

  16. Select not to print test page (there is more that needs to be configured before printing) and click Next>
  17. Click Finish to install the printer drivers

Part B

  1. Right-click on the printer you just installed and go to Properties
  2. In the properties page for the printer select the Port tab
  3. Click on the port representing the printer you just installed and then click on the Configure Port button
  4. In the configure Standard TCP/IP Port Monitor window select the LPR option

    Under the LPR Settings section, type in the queue name (if you don't know this ask root)

    Check the option LPR Byte Counting Enable

  5. Click OK to exit window
  6. Click OK again to exit the properties page
